The Chapel of La Soledad
The construction of the chapel of La Soledad in the parish of San Sebastián de Soreasu de Azpeitia was ordered by Captain Nicolás Sáez de Elola, a resident of Azpeitia, in 1553. The chapel comprised a sacristy, a space for the organ, sepulchre and altarpieces and it was generously decorated with murals. The chapel underwent a number of important changes, especially in the 19th century. Between 2004 and 2006, it was restored completely to its original glory by the Regional Council of Gipuzkoa. It is unique not only in Gipuzkoa, but also in the Basque Country and dates from the Renaissance period in which architecture, painting and sculpture combined to produce a result of high quality and purity of style.
