The horse cave

The cave of Ekain (Deba) contains an impressive collection of cave paintings from the Magdalenian period (between 14,500 and 10,000 years old) and it has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Based on a large horse's head painted in black, the drawings are distributed in five large groups: The first has engraved figures of goats and deer, as well as a salmon. The second group is made up of "the most beautiful set of horses of all Franco-Cantabrian parietal art": twenty-five horses and nine bison, together with smaller figures, with a predominance of black, but also with the inclusion of red in the paintings. The third group comprises a pair of bears and the fourth is made up of another seven horses. The last group also has engravings that have been traditionally associated with two rhinoceroses.
